Presidents Message March 2017
We are only five months from the start of the 2017 Prairie Meadows Quarter Horse meet. This year looks very promising as we are expecting a record number of horses, trainers, and owners. For the third time in six years Prairie Meadows will be hosting the Bank of America Challenge Championships. They will be run on the final day of our meet, October 14th, and we expect the total purses that night to be between $1,600,000 and $1,700,000. That night will feature nine stakes races including the five Bank of America Challenge Championship races as well as the Jim Bader Futurity, the Valley Junction Futurity, the Altoona Derby and the Polk County Derby.
Purse money for the 2017 meet will be increased slightly from 2016 since total gaming revenue from Prairie Meadows was increased in 2016. This is very positive as we are seeing purses in many states drop for the 2017 season. Our meet will once again feature the Double Gold Futurity and Derby trials on opening weekend as well as the Iowa Stallion Futurity and Derby trials. For the first time, the Iowa Stallion Futurity will be for Iowa bred horses only. The added money for the Double Gold Stakes will be the highest ever!
Post times for this year's races are 6:00pm on Fridays and 1:00pm for Saturday and Sunday races. Post time for the one Thursday night of racing will be 6:00pm the week of the Challenge Championships. The race card will once again feature eight races per night with a few nights running nine or ten races. Again this year's stand alone quarter horse meet at Prairie Meadows will include 26 days and nights of racing. The meet begins Saturday August 19th and ends Saturday October 14th.
Until then, good luck where ever else you are racing! We look forward to seeing all of you in the winners circle at Prairie Meadows!
